"Anorexia nervosa and Bulimia nervosa are both types of psychiatric disorders characterized by severe disturbances in eating behaviors. Both occur primarily in previously healthy young women who become overly concerned with their body weight and shape."

Source- http://www.diffen.com/difference/Anorexia_vs_Bulimia (But don't bother looking there unless you're Dr Lowell)

Ladies and gentlemen. I want to bring to your attention the issue of eating disorders. It is unhealthy. TV and the casting of extremely shapely actors and actresses does not help. Social pressure and so many slim friends do not help. The fact that you are coming of age and increasingly self-conscious does not help.

Remember that your body is the temple of God. 1 Corinthians 6:18-20.

You are all growing people. Eat what you need to develop healthy bones and tissue. I assure you that when you come to my age, physical appearance is not half as important as character and friendship. Focus on those.

May I suggest an alternative to dieting. Exercise. Guys and gals, you'll look much better, much more alert and alive when you exercise. You will of course also naturally lose weight. The guys will develop more muscular frames. The ladies will have firmer arms, more healthy, beautiful complexions...

So guys, if you think that by dieting and losing so much weight you're doing yourself a favour, I appeal to you, think again. You'll be all skin and bones.

Girls, if you eat too little and think it's good for health, think again. A healthy diet comprises of less fried stuff, more soupy meals, less chocolates and less sweets... etc. It's okay to eat LOTS of HEALTHY food.

Allow me to share with you that when I was around Pri 3 or 4 I couldn't see my toes when I looked down cuz my belly was too big. For a few years I stayed off chocolates and sweets. I peeled off the skin of chicken that I ate. I stayed off soft drinks/ aerated drinks. I played lots of soccer. But I still ate a lot food (homecooked, mostly), but not fried food/ fast food. And I think I was quite in shape by the time I was Sec 1/2. A healthy diet works. Dieting doesn't.

Of Vampires and Werewolves and well y'know Sex

I'm sure many of you have more than a little interest in the series by Stephenie Meyers.

Well, I looked through most of the storyline of the 4 books. It's quite entertaining, I agree. It's my personal view that all this interest in the book and movie is quite alright, but I do want to gently bring to mind a few things for you to remember.

1) I know the vampires and werewolves in the book are nothing like the Count Dracula type. I.e. clearly demonic, anti-Christian, afraid of crosses... etc. However, bear in mind that the root idea of vampires are demonic/evil beings. So just be cautious on this point ok? Just because vampires are romanticized in this series of novels doesn't mean we should accept everything about them.

2) Werewolves (Lycanthropes) are likewise, in European mythology closely linked with magical arts/ superstition... etc. While I personally feel these subjects are alright as pure entertainment, be careful not to internalize too much of this stuff.

3) Be aware that the author is a Mormon. That's not a Christian like us. It's a cult. She's prob from this cult called the Church of Latter Day Saints. Their doctrine is quite different from us. While that might not mean much, just know that her influences might not be very biblical at all. Don't be confused and think that a Christian wrote the book. She's from a cult.

4) What I'm most concerned about is the very adult themes of this series. There are talks about sex and Bella wanting Edward to have make love to her... etc. I understand Edward is portrayed as a very proper, gentlemanly boyfriend in the series, who refuses those advances as he doesn't want to hurt Bella.

In spite of all this, take everything with a cautious mind. Always go back to scripture. Understand that sex out of marriage is wrong. It is severely out of God's plans for us. Many youth these days are sexually active out of marriage. And probably most of you talk about such things already.

So guard yourselves. Know who you are in Christ. You are loved children. You must live to be holy, just as your God is holy.

Guys and gals. If you ever get attached in future, remember a few things.
Guys- honour your girlfriend. Guard her in a godly manner. Do not succumb to peer pressure and become sexually immoral.
Gals- Do not succumb to pressure when you see other people doing such things. Guard your own purity. If your boyfriend is Christian and loves you, he would not even suggest such a thing.

Hello again!
You asked for photos with me so heres a photo with me.

Yup thats the leaning tower of pisa right there! Now you know the real story behind why its leaning! The leaning tower of pisa was really leaning and quite cool to see what you read in storybooks as a child in person. too bad it was kinda misty.

random photo of a cute car i saw along the streets. surprisingly can fit 2 people in!
We manage to find and eat the 2nd best icecream in the wORLD! hahaha theres a newspaper clipping inside to prove it!

One thing that impresses me most here in Italy are the sizes of the churches. Churches here are really grand mega churches like super dupe huge and super duper old so its super duper impressive. Really makes you wonder how they built such structures in the past and also how it must be like to worship in such a place. So very big!The outside of the church, which imo is kinda ugly colour coordination but its super duper tall and huge. like 20storeys high kind. imagine an entire HDB block as a church. something like that, just prettier.

I also managed to catch a sneak preview of this year's thanksgiving performance right here in one of the churches!
If you look really closely, you can see faith yeo on top of the roof, and johnmiah in the foreground walking towards the manger XD
btw, they dont display a baby jesus, not sure if its part of some law/doctrine or they keep the baby jesus and present it as part of the christmas festival ceremony or wad not.

ok end of my random musings! gonna sleep now.
please someone else blog about something! anything! everything!

Hello from Rome again!
Exciting times and whilst I have the oppurtunity to, I better blog!
So I visited the Vatican today. For those of you who don't know what the vatican is, go wikipedia it. in short its actually the smallest independent state in the WORLD. and its ruled by the pope. yes the catholic guy who is like the king of catholicism. but i digress, so its this tiny city in Rome and it has influence and power over most of all of the catholic churches in the world and as christians even protestant, we somehow do get affected by the going ons in the vatican. but i digress, what amazed me more was the visit to the famous Sistine Chapel and the St Peter's Basilica!
The sistine chapel is this place where they hold meetings to elect the new popes but more famously, it is known to house the work of Michelangelo. If you're a budding artist then you should know about Michelangelo, or if you watch teenage mutant ninja turtles, he's one of the famous artists of his time. So he was actually forced to paint this entire roof of the chapel by the Caesar at that time and it turned out to be a really beautiful work of art.
Below is one of his later paitings called the Final judgement where it shows Christ ressurecting people to Heaven and condeming others to Hell. try to see if you can spot the Christ!
Yea its the glowy one in the middle! and well you can see the obvious difference between the Heaven and Hell.
If you look at the big picture, you can see that its actually the shape of the 2 tablets of commandments that Moses brought down!
Cool huh.
And below is the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, paintings after paintings after paintings, all scenes from the book of Genesis!
Most of you probably recognize the one in the middle of the roof of God and Adam and that famous touch! Still if you dont, its a good time to start knowing ;)

In fact alot of the paintings actually have alot of Christian or Catholic background to them and you'll find that alot of Bible stories you learn actually become subjects of these painter's arts! For example, David and Goliathe, Christ's death, betrayal etc. All are central themes and subjects that famous artists love to portray and recreate time after time after time. So it was really quite exciting for me to see how all those stories you read in print were represented in paitings in context of the civilisation at that time!

After the Sistine chapel, we went to the St Peter's Basilica. If you don't know what it is, its actually the biggest Church in the WORLD. and by big i mean big.

Thats a view of it, the obelisk is some decoration from outside. The dome is part of the church.

To give you an idea of how big it is, its about the size of (attn Josiah) 1.5 football fields. Yes its THAT big inside. And thats only the chapel without the rest of the little rooms. More impressively was how HIGH it was. It was so high, at the highest point (ie the dome) you can fit the statue of liberty in, and there'll still be some space left!

Huge huge church.

Here's a nice view of the 3 most impt things you can see inside. To the bottom right is a statue of St Peter's. Apparently you gotta touch his right foot to be blessed. Too bad it was closed.

In the middle you can see the huge bronze pavilion thingy that houses where the pope would stand to preach or conduct his ceremonies or whatever. Imagine like our stage, just much more ancient and much much more majestic.

In the background you can see the beautiful altar which is made from pure GOLD. crafted by Bernini himself and its really really really pretty.

Imagine if the fellowship hall looked as majestic with the lights beaming through the windows and what not. Very solemn mood indeed.

And this is the dome from below. Cos i'm too old and too poor to afford to climb all the way up XD

So cheers from Rome and til we meet again, God bless you all!

The alps! Nice right! can use as wallpaper (:
The bear pit in Berne. A Swiss capital named after the bear!

The colosseum. actually an amphitheatre, called a colosseum cos Nero built some colossal statue next to it and well, the whole area was called the colosseum. still italy most's visited tourist attraction.

And inside the colosseum theres a cross! Ironically placed at the spot where the king sat and watched Christians get matyred for entertainment. The pope christened this spot and made them erect a cross here to make sure that the Christians who died here were never forgotten. and of course great photography skills by yours truly ;)

Hello from Rome!
There's free WIFI here so i dont need to limit my visits to tags!
So having read all your blogs, it seems thanksgiving was quite enjoyable and went rather smoothly i hope. How was Daniel's kiss of betrayal? Not as bad right?
Anyhow, goodjob to all and hope everyone has as much fun the second time round performing and doing an even better job since all of you are so familiar now with your roles and lines.

Anyway, how has sunday school been? It should be like 2 more lessons before all of you are relegated from sundays in the fellowship hall and ushered into the chapel for PnW from now on. I do hope you enjoy your last few session with your teachers and enjoy having the freedom and space to dance during praise and worship, to lean on the wall at the back of the hall and to push each other whilst singing praise songs. Not saying you cant do that in the chapel of course, but the space will be much lesser ;) So cooperate while you can with your teachers and please blog here so i can find out whats going on!
Oh how's the last week PnW coming along too? Is everyone all ready and good to go?

Next, moving on to more serious things, it has come to my attention that some of YOU are guilty of harassing my brother much to his horror this sunday. What are you all doing! Why are you all bullying my brother! Don't make me line all of you up in a line when I come back and make him identify you like some witness identification stand. So who did it, fess up now and your sentence may be lighter...

Alright now for some photos.

Hi all,

I want to say a big 'Thank You you' for those who had laid hands and prayed for my recovery when I was running a high fever during saturday's thanksgiving rehearsals. God heard your prayers for me and I am here writing this as a testimony to your prayers.

For those who went for thanksgiving 08, it was really a job well done! We are all very proud of you! Great job to the Disciples(Garik, Gared, Josiah, Dayn, Amelia, Faith Tiew, Isabelle aka Peter, Jessica, Michelle, Siyi, Nat Teo), Dancers(Clara, Faith Yeo, Shiri, Janice, Kelly, Esther) and the Wise Man Boy(Johnmiah)! Do post your pictures here so that I can kope them too. haha.

Ok lets do a little summary of our lesson on BLOGGING this Sunday, as well as elaborate on some of the points.

1. Remember that a blog is NOT an ONLINE DIARY.

It is open for everyone to read and hence, should be viewed sth like that of a publication(e.g. newspaper). Remember that even newspapers get sued if they report the wrong things or cast a wrong impression on people.

2. Blogs should NOT be used to CRITICISE.

Matthew 7:12 says "Do to others what you would have them do to you."

Putting aside even morality, the above reason is strong enough for us to reconsider scolding people on our blogs. If you criticise, others will end up rebutting and also scolding/criticising you, and in the end, you will end up hurt and angry. If ever anyone criticises you on a blog, pray and ask God to give you the strength to forgive that person and also to ignore. Such a way, not only will you prove yourselves worthy to be called Christ followers, but also, you'll lead a happier life. Remember, for the one who criticises, most of the time, they make themselves look bad and grouchy. :P

3. Learn to PROTECT YOURSELVES online.
Keep in mind that we love you all and do not wish you all to come to any harm. So, do not reveal your own handphone numbers and other personal particulars, because in such a high technological age, it is very easy to track your location(especially since Singapore is very small too). Even now, just looking at the ip. address of your internet connection, it is easy to tell which part of singapore you are using the computer from. Other forms of protection would include, not totally believe a stranger who tags on your chatbox.... blah blah.. I'm sure you all know...

4. PROTECT your FRIENDS.
Mark 12:31 says "...Love your neighbour as yourself..."

Good food must share, but secrets, you must never share(not without your friend's permission at least). Whenever your friends tell you something which is close to their hearts, like their feelings, opinions, or even results, it would be polite to ask permission before posting it. If you can do this, it will show that you respect them, and they will trust you more. Remember, trust takes years to build up, but can be shattered in a single day.

Now, for those who had been affected by your friend's blogging, I can only say that in life, there will be more of such occassion. Learn to forgive those who have exposed your secrets online, be it incidentally or accidentally. If you are unhappy about anything posted, please do inform in a nice way so that that particular post/comment could be taken down from your friend's blog. In such a way, not only will you stop yourself from making an enemy of that person, but your friendship might even grow stronger when both of you learn to respect one another.

So far, this is all I have from my own experience. If any of you has any to add, pls add on! haha

By the time you read this, I'll prob be on a plane on my way to chilly Europe for a month's vacation. But I just had to take time out of my last minute packing and freaking out to post this here cos as i realized whilst filming you people on the last day of the Oligopistos camp, its probably the last time I'll ever meet all of you as "children".

Cos come next year, I won't get to see Siyi sitting in the fellowship hall at 8am reading her chinese comic book when I arrive.
I won't get to fight with ShiRi over the drums before official rehearsal starts.
I won't get to bug Josiah who comes early and ask him to sms the other guys to ask them if they're coming.
I won't have to try to eavesdrop and understand what Nat Boon and Johnmiah are deep in discussion about.
Ok better stop here before i start to verbal diarrhoea again.
But you get the drift, I'll prob not see you all til next year when you're officially out of CM.
So I'd just like to say that I've really enjoyed the journey all of you have given me, seeing you through as my first praise team class, when all of you were still innocent precious little tots til now when all of you are 12 going on 13 youths, changed so much, grown so much and bonded so much over these 4 years.

So all the best whichever school you may go to, make the most of the rest of your life and enjoy conducting the last PnW session of this year! Just a tip though, choose EASIER songs!

PS GET WELL SOON DANIEL!

Hey all

I thought I needed to clarify at least one point on the last post.

The bible does not say we are evil.

Yes, we have the seed of sin in us, due to Adam's fall. And yes, we are sinners. However, that is only half the truth.

Most Christians forget that the word of God also says we are seated in heavenly places, and that God has triumphed over sin, making them a public spectacle. We are referred to countless times in the NT as saints.

So please don't get it wrong people. We are not evil. We are saints, who have been made right with God. And if we are made right with God, we are no longer evil. No one has the right to call us evil or wicked, and that includes ourselves. Does not Psalm 1:6 say that the Lord watches over the righteous but the way of the wicked will perish?

So which are you? Romans 8:16 says that as many who are called children of God have the
Spirit of God. We are all children of God, made righteous, no longer considered evil, since we are sanctified by the blood of Christ.

"Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died- more than that, who was raised to life- is at the right hand of God and is also interceeding for us"- Romans 8:33-34

I am very concerned over this matter. Any thought that says you are evil is a lie. It is a very dangerous deception. Never believe in that. If we think we are evil, we give ourselves the excuse to act in evil ways. No, we are good. God has made us right. And we shall act in faith and live righteously, as He has enabled us to do. God's power is at work within us. (Ephesians 3:20b).

P.S. Please don't be discouraged. Faith, that was a very excellent piece that you brought to this blog. I'm only trying to correct one small point that was wrong, out of many many good points.

TY

(I encourage any of you to continue the discussion. Can email me at tysurfs@hotmail.com if you have any questions you're too shy to ask. I'll tell you what I know.)

Friday, December 5, 2008

Hellooooo! (:

I don't know why, but i felt like i should post something.

Since i received a very good Email, I should post it here.
Try to read it ALL ! (:
Heres the WHOLE THING. :
Subject: Re: Science vs God
A psychologist once said: 'Even if there is no God, men will invent one.' (cos of the inability of man to deal with fear of death, etc.)
'Let me explain the problem science has with Jesus Christ.' The atheist professor of philosophy pauses before his class and then asks one of his new students to stand.
'You're a Christian, aren't you, son?'
'Yes sir,' the student says.
'So you believe in God?'
'Absolutely.'
'Is God good?'
'Sure! God's good.'
'Is God all-powerful? Can God do anything?'
'Yes.'
'Are you good or evil?'
'The Bible says I'm evil.'
The professor grins knowingly. 'Aha! The Bible!' He considers for a moment.
'Here's one for you. Let's say there's a sick person over here and you can cure him. You can do it. Would you help him? Would you try?' (Quote “Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is impotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Whence then is evil?” [Epicurus])
'Yes sir, I would.'
'So you're good...!'
'I wouldn't say that.'
'But why not say that? You'd help a sick and maimed person if you could.
Most of us would if we could. But God doesn't.'
The student does not answer, so the professor continues. 'He doesn't, does he? My brother was a Christian who died of cancer, even though he prayed to Jesus to heal him How is this Jesus good? Hmmm? Can you answer that one?'
The student remains silent.
'No, you can't, can you?' the professor says.
He takes a sip of water from a glass on his desk to give the student time to relax.
'Let's start again, young fella. Is God good?'
'Er...yes,' the student says.
'Is Satan good?'
The student doesn't hesitate on this one. 'No.'
'Then where does Satan come from?'
The student : 'From...God..'
'That's right. God made Satan, didn't he? Tell me, son. Is there evil in this world?'
'Yes, sir.'
'Evil's everywhere, isn't it? And God did make everything, correct?'
'Yes.'
'So who created evil?' The professor continued,
'If God created everything, then God created evil, since evil exists, and
according to the principle that our works define who we are, then God is evil.'
Without allowing the student to answer, the professor continues: 'Is there sickness? Immorality? Hatred? Ugliness? All these terrible things, do they exist in this world?'
The student: 'Yes.'
'So who created them?'
The student does not answer again, so the professor repeats his question. 'Who created them? There is still no answer. Suddenly the lecturer breaks away to pace in front of the classroom. The class is mesmerized.
Tell me,' he continues onto another student. 'Do you believe in Jesus Christ, son?'
The student's voice is confident: 'Yes, professor, I do.'
The old man stops pacing. 'Science says you have five senses you use to identify and observe the world around you. Have you ever seen Jesus?'
'No sir. I've never seen Him.'
'Then tell us if you've ever heard your Jesus?'
'No, sir, I have not.'
'Have you ever actually felt your Jesus, tasted your Jesus or smelled your Jesus? Have you ever had any sensory perception of Jesus Christ, or God for that matter?'
'No, sir, I'm afraid I haven't.'
'Yet you still believe inhim?'
'Yes.'
'According to the rules of empirical, testable, demonstrable protocol, science says your God doesn't exist. What do you say to that, son?'
'Nothing,' the studentreplies. 'I only have my faith.'(A couple of gods to have 'faith' in www.godchecker.com)
'Yes, faith,' the professor repeats. 'And that is the problem science has with God. There is no evidence, only faith.'
The student stands quietly for a moment, before asking a question of his own.
'Professor, is there such a thing as heat?'
'Yes,' the professor replies. 'There's heat.'
'And is there such a thing as cold?'
'Yes, son, there's cold too.' ( No decent professor would be caught saying this.)
'No sir, there isn't.'
The professor turns to face the student, obviously interested. The room suddenly becomes very quiet. The student begins to explain
'You can have lots of heat, even more heat, super-heat, mega-heat, unlimited heat, white heat, a little heat or no heat, but we don't have anything called 'cold'. We can hit up to 458 degrees below zero, which is no heat, but we can't go any further after that. There is no such thing as cold; otherwise we would be able to go colder than the lowest-458 degrees. Every body or object is susceptible to study when it has or transmits energy, and heat is what makes a body or matter have or transmit energy. Absolute zero (-458 F) is the total absence of heat. You see, sir, cold is only a word we use to describe the absence of heat. We cannot measure cold. Heat we can measure in thermal units because heat is energy. Cold is not the opposite of heat, sir, just the absence of it.'
Silence across the room. A pen drops somewhere in the classroom, sounding like a hammer.
'What about darkness, professor. Is there such a thing as darkness?'
'Yes,' the professor replies without hesitation.
'What is night if it isn't darkness?' (same as above)
'You're wrong again, sir. Darkness is not something; it is the absence of something. You can have low light, normal light, bright light, flashing light, but if you have no light constantly you have nothing and it's called darkness, isn't it? That's the meaning we use to define the word. In reality, darkness isn't. If it were, you would be able to make darkness darker, wouldn't you?'
The professor begins to smile at the student in front of him. This will be a good semester. 'So what point are you making, young man?'
'Yes, professor. My point is, your philosophical premise is flawed to start with, and so your conclusion must also be flawed.'
The professor's face cannot hide his surprise this time. 'Flawed? Can you explain how?'
'You are working on the premise of duality,' the student explains. 'You argue that there is life and then there's death; a good God and a bad God. You are viewing the concept of God as something finite, something we can measure. Sir, science can't even explain a thought. It uses electricity and magnetism, but has never seen, much less fully understood either one. To view death as the opposite of life is to be ignorant of the fact that death cannot exist as a substantive thing. Death is not the opposite of life, just the absence of it.'
(Can something that has never lived die?)
'Now tell me, professor. Do you teach your students that they evolved from a monkey?'( AH HA!!! Typical creationist bullsh*t. Any decent student in university should be well aware of the theory of evolution. Homo sapiens share a common ancestor with the monkeys, they do not directly evolve from monkeys.)
'If you are referring to the natural evolutionary process, young man, yes, of course I do.'
'Have you ever observed evolution with your own eyes, sir?' (mutation of germs? )
The professor begins to shake his head, still smiling, as he realizes where the argument is going. A very good semester, indeed.
'Since no one has ever observed the process of evolution at work (mutation of germs? )and cannot even prove that this process is an on-going endeavour, are you not teaching your opinion, sir? Are you now not a scientist, but a preacher?'
The class is in uproar. The student remains silent until the commotion has subsided.
'To continue the point you were making earlier to the other student,
let me give you an example of what I mean.'
The student looks around the room.'Is there anyone in the class who has ever seen the professor's brain?' The class breaks out into laughter.
'Is there anyone here who has ever heard the professor's brain, felt theprofessor's brain, touched or smelled the professor's brain? No one appears to have done so. So, according to the established rules of empirical, stable, demonstrable protocol, science says that you have no brain, with all due respect, sir. So if science says you have no brain, how can we trust your lectures, sir?'
Now the room is silent. The professor just stares at the student, his face unreadable.
(Lol. I would have retorted; if i do not have a brain, how do you expect im talking to you right now?)
Finally, after what seems an eternity, the old man answers. 'I guess you'll have to take them on faith.'
'Now, you accept that there is faith, and, in fact, faith exists with life,' the student continues. 'Now, sir, is there such a thing as evil?
Now uncertain, the professor responds, 'Of course, there is. We see it everyday. It is in the daily example of man's inhumanity to man. It is in the multitude of crime and violence everywhere in the world. These manifestations are nothing else but evil.'
To this the student replied, 'Evil does not exist sir, or at least it does not exist unto itself. Evil is simply the absence of God. It is just like darkness and cold, a word that man has created to describe the absence of God.
God did not create evil. Evil is the result of what happens when man does not have God's love present in his heart. It's like the cold that comes when there is no heat or the darkness that comes when there is no light.' (Lol, why not blame ur wrongdoings on the imaginary flying spaghetti monster)
The professor sat down.

Oligopistos SU-COS Children's Camp 2008

The end of this week sums up the Children's Camp for the year of 2008, themed 'Oligopistos'. I hope all of you who went had fun. haha.

Throughout the whole camp, us teachers did not have much time with you all, but i was really heartened by some of the things which i see you guys doing.

I like the way;

1) the guys(Josiah, Gared and Garik) were so concern over Daniel when he was sick on the third day, visiting him every break time, and that you all prayed over him for healing

2) Janice and Kasia took up the responsibilities of looking after the younger ones when the group leaders were busy doing other things

3) Faith Yeo looked after Ranice.

4) Dayn cheered together with his group

5) Josiah and Shi Ri led their respective groups in cheers during games.

6) Faith Tiew and Kelly managed to break the ice between the first and second session and even had fun together.

7) all of you looked when you show me your tired but radiant smile whenever i smiled to some of you, including Anna. It really encourages me even though I was really lacking sleep at some point in time during the camp.

8) Garik was so caring towards Gared when Gared had a headache.

9) Johnmiah's group woke up early at 6.45am to discuss about Finale Night

10) Siyi went to show her gratitude to Jie Jie Zhang Pei for helping her to fix her specs

11) most of you came together and decided to form a band so that you all can continue to play for praise and worship together.

Of course, I could not be always around, and alot of things you guys do that I do not see, but here is just some encouragement, to tell you of the good that I see in all of you. Continue to do well, and yes... the pictures will be uploaded soon. haha.
